Orwell, VT— Have you ever been hiking and wondered about the strange colorful varied forms growing on logs and the forest floor? Come to the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont, on Sunday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. for a guided hike with Skidmore College mycologist Sue Van Hook. Expert Van Hook will lead a forest walk that is an introduction to mushrooms and other fungi. The group will look closely at the biodiversity present in the fungal kingdom. You will learn the major groups of fungi and be able to recognize a handful of common edible species, know how to spore print, preserve, and cook fungi. Other topics will include the uses of fungi for bioremediation and restoration of damaged habitats.
Come early and bring a picnic lunch before heading out. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
This walk is sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition and Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. It is open to the public.
