“THE TALES TREES TELL”:

NATURE WALK AT MOUNT INDEPENDENCE

ORWELL, Vt.  On Sunday, September 21, join Andi Lloyd, Associate Professor of Biology at Middlebury College, for a guided nature walk at 1:00 p.m. on “The Tales Trees Tell” at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont.   Professor Lloyd will show participants how to read the history of forests through tree rings, fallen trees, and other clues.  Lloyd has been bringing her classes to Mount Independence and is ready to share her knowledge with others.

Meet at the Mount Independence Museum.  Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring water, and if you like, bring lunch or a snack to enjoy before the hike.  Tickets are $5.00 for adults, free for children under 15, and includes admission to the Visitor Center.  The event is sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition and Vermont Division for Historic Preservation.

Mount Independence, one of Vermont’s state-owned historic sites, is a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the least disturbed Revolutionary War sites in America.  Most of the trees on the Mount were cut down during the Revolution. The site is located near the end of Mount Independence Road, which is six miles west of the intersections of VT Routes 73 and 22A in Orwell.  Regular hours are 9:30 to 5:00 daily through October 13.  Call 802-948-2000 for more information.
